Before transforming the old site of the Zhongshan "Shichu" Maintenance Depot into a cultural and creative park, an art week was envisioned for this specific site to align with its unique atmosphere. Wasteland Art Week was conceived as an art exhibition designed to exist solely during this transitional period.
Wasteland Art Week invites 22 groups of artist to see the site, select and create or display artworks inspired by its atmosphere. This exhibition aimed to embrace uncertainty, showcasing how the site’s transformation could ignite creativity.
The visual identity revolves around transforming old forms into new ones. The dynamic interplay of Chinese and English typography embodies the sense of uncertainty and the emergence of new ideas during the transition. Sound-reactive animations, paired with traditional Cantonese instrumental music, which also celebrate Guangdong’s cultural heritage.
Three silhouettes in the posters represent the three core elements in this exhibition: the broken walls on the site, the banyan trees growing on the site, and the Qi river right by the exhibition site flows through Zhongshan city. They represent the old, the new, and the Zhongshan people.
